Relocating Pipes by noelstudio1

We’re moving forward again after a brief delay. Today, the work involved re-drilling holes so that the pipes can be relocated. This is actually more exciting than it sounds. Once the pipes are moved, the main University entrance, in front of the arches, will be much more open. We won’t have the pipes blocking the arches anymore. However, refitting the pipes is a big project. We’re told that the crane might arrive soon.

The Richmond Register published an article, “Uncovering the Past While Building for the Future,” about the Library space’s past, present, and future. Uncovering original details from the ’20s and ’30s has prompted us to think not only about the future of the Library but also about where it has been. Take a look at this very interesting article about the Noel Studio:

With construction underway nearby, the furniture is being arranged for the Noel Studio groundbreaking ceremony. The event will take place on Saturday, September 19, 2009 at 11am, with tours of the Noel Studio space running before and after the event. With so much construction and activity taking place, I find that I am taking many pictures with my phone, which explains the poor quality. More photos to come soon, though, hopefully of better quality.

Steel work and drywall installation will begin soon in the R&I area. Also, several revisions to the plan were discussed this week and are in various stages of development. Included in the revisions will be the addition of interior windows to the R&I area along with an open space (that we have called a cul-de-sac) for spontaneous collaboration and even perhaps larger meetings.

9/9 Update: Uncovering Brick Archways by noelstudio1

Several of us were lucky enough to go on a tour of the construction site today. The Studio space is remarkably clean compared to our last visit, providing a better idea of how much space we will have once complete. For some reason, the space feels much more open than it did last time. Of course, we’re only in the early stages, but you can certainly see the transformation taking place already.

The skylights provide amazing natural light to the Studio area. They will really enhance the open and airy feeling of the Studio. They’re just ideal . . . you can’t ask for better natural lighting.

A focal point of our tour today was the original brick archways that were uncovered earlier this week. The archways date back to 1935 and are part of the original library. Discussions are underway to preserve as much of this historic architecture as possible.

The design of the Noel Studio space is inteded to promote creativity and collaboration. The space itself will be open so as to allow students to work together as groups with a variety of high- and low-tech equipment. Noticable transformations are taking place throughout this space.

The entrance to the grand reading room is blocked to allow for the construction of three new openings, which will enhance accessibility to the Noel Studio. The commons area, which is on the first floor, is being opened up to provide collaborative space for consultants and students to discuss a wide variety of projects.
